John Thompson

John is the President and Co-Founder of SAGA Wisdom (sagawisdom.com); an innovative online platform providing masterclass training to upskill energy industry professionals.

He holds a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from Queen's University and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary.

Since 2009 John is better known as a reservoir engineer and instructor of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) specializing in unconventional reservoirs. From that experience, he has analyzed production data from thousands of wells, spanning most major tight and ultra-tight plays.

John has authored 19 papers on well performance analysis, primarily focused on production forecasting, well spacing and completions optimization and diagnosing untapped oil & gas production potential.

From 2017 to 2019 he was Chair of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Reservoir Evaluation and Production Optimization Special Interest Group and in 2019 he received the SPE Canadian Regional Service Award. In 2025 John was appointed as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer.
