01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Hello everyone. My name is Shahab D. Mohaghegh. I'm the president of Intelligence Solutions Incorporated. I'm a reservoir engineering professor at West Virginia University. And the topic that will be covered in this course is Artificial Intelligence Reservoir Simulation and Modeling. I have about 30 years of experience on artificial intelligence. And I know that everybody gets involved to this technology, it's going to change your life in a fantastic fashion. I'm sure you're going to love it.

02. AI-based Reservoir Simulation & Modeling

So to get started and let me talk about this course first. And in order to do that I have to explain the numerical reservoir simulation, which I know you know a lot about it. I'm not saying anything you don't know but it's important to cover that to explain how artificial intelligence does what it's supposed to do on this technology.
So as you all know, original numerical reservoir simulation is based on our traditional engineering. The Industrial revolution started in late 17th and beginning of the 18th century and original engineering technology started in 19th century. And what we have been doing in reservoir simulation and modeling and numerical reservoir simulation, that was developed in 1960, about 63 years ago. And comparing to engineering application of artificial intelligence, the original engineering technology can be called traditional engineering because the engineering of AI is the new one. It's a revolution. It's different. That's why we call the other one traditional. In that context therefore, comparing the artificial intelligence reservoir simulation and modeling, then we can take and call the numerical reservoir simulation as traditional numerical reservoir simulation, where traditional it says it's been doing until now even. However, when we going to do in artificial intelligence, as you will be exposed to in this course, you will see the difference between them.

03. AI-based Reservoir Simulation & Modeling (2)

So artificial intelligence reservoir simulation and modeling is a new technology. It's AI-based reservoir simulation that has been developed actually several years ago. It was developed by Intelligent Solutions Inc. in the United States, and recently the AI-based reservoir simulation and modeling has been used by many companies (petroleum engineering companies) in the world right now. They do and they get exposed to it, they become very happy about it.

04. AI-based Reservoir Simulation & Modeling (3)

Based on this application to the actual field in several countries in the world, AI-based reservoir simulation modeling has proven to be far better and a lot more faster than our traditional numerical reservoir simulation that we have been doing in the past 63 years. And I'm sure you were exposed to it: ChatGPT, Google Bard, Microsoft Bing, that you see the same things that we have been doing before, now we can do it much faster and much, much quicker. That's what AI does and literally the same thing is happening to AI working in reservoir simulation.
So several years ago at the start of AI-based reservoir simulation and modeling, it was applied to highly complex oil and gas fields that were not able to be simulated and history matched using our traditional numerical reservoir simulation. And that's why we actually started working for them. They were working with CMG, with T-navigator, with Eclipse, with a lot of them, and they were trying to build a history (numerical reservoir simulation) and they couldn't history match it because it was so complex. That was the first time ever they came to us and they said, 'OK, can you do the AI to see what happens?'. And we did it and we got a perfect history forecasting and so forth. And that was the main difference between them. You will be exposed to everything I'm saying in this course because I'm going in a lot of detail. You can see it. It's not something that I'm just saying that you have to believe. Don't until you get to see exactly all the details that I go through.

There are much differences between traditional numerical reservoir simulation and what we're going to cover in AI-based reservoir simulation and modeling. The engineering application of artificial intelligence is a unique and incredibly strong technology that can be helpful to all the companies in their entire work. That's one of the major issues that I'm going to cover here, which is so incredibly important, about using artificial intelligence to solve engineering related problems vs. general intelligence issues.

0. AI-based Reservoir Simulation & Modeling (5)

In this course you will be exposed to the detail of engineering applications of artificial intelligence in petroleum engineering. Specifically, in this course it will be in reservoir engineering. Of course it can be done to every other things that we do in petroleum engineering using AI. But this one has to do with reservoir engineering.
To be able to fully understand what the engineering application of AI is, it is highly important to first we have to learn what is AI. Because if we don't know what AI is, the engineering application of AI doesn't make much sense to anybody. That is what we are going to cover first. We going to go through and see what really AI is and when you will be exposed to it you will find out it's not my opinion. What I'm going to cover in artificial intelligence is everything that I have learned in the past 30 years and it's incredibly important to know what artificial intelligence is. After that, we find out the general intelligence, which is engineering intelligence, what the difference is and how it should be used.
It is also important to learn the difference (this is incredibly important for us), the difference between artificial general intelligence and artificial engineering intelligence. This is incredibly important and unfortunately a lot of people in engineering do not believe that these 2 are different. And when I explain it to you, these are not my personal ideas, I'm going to explain what the technology is and has been developed.

It is important to note that artificial general intelligence is a fantastic and incredibly complex version of artificial intelligence. When I say that they are different, artificial general intelligence vs. artificial engineering intelligence, I'm not saying general intelligence is very, very simple but that one is hard. That's not what I'm saying. Artificial intelligence itself is a fantastic technology. You've been exposed to a lot of things. And in the future, in the past decade, it's going to be much, much, much more exposure to what artificial intelligence is, specifically in general intelligence, meaning everybody in the world can be using it. However, recently large numbers of people have been exposed to ChatGPT, Google Bard, Microsoft Bing, that are fantastic applications of artificial general intelligence.

The fact is that these artificial general intelligence technologies (ChatGPT, Google Bard,Microsoft Bing), these technologies can so much help and must be used currently by even engineers right now. I'm not saying it shouldn't be used. Of course it can be used. However, it is very important to note that artificial engineering intelligence is absolutely required to simulate, to model and to solve engineering related problems through artificial intelligence using mathematical equations. What I mean (as you very well will be exposed to), yes, these ChatGPT, Google Bard.., all of these general intelligence can explain to you. But it cannot solve, it cannot model, and you can be exposed to that.

To generate the correct understanding of artificial intelligence in reservoir simulation and modeling that we're going to cover in this course, it is absolutely required the following items that I'm going to cover in this course. First and foremost, I'm going to cover what artificial intelligence is. Then in the context, what we know artificial intelligence is (that's the most important part), how AI must be used to solve, to model, to solve engineering related problems. And that is known as artificial engineering intelligence. After these two I'm going to cover how AI must be used to solve, to model and to solve and to optimize reservoir engineering. And finally I'm going to show you an AI-based software application that has been developed for generating this artificial intelligence reservoir simulation and modeling.

0. This Course's Outline

And the outline of this course (as I mentioned), first artificial intelligence and then artificial engineering intelligence. Then AI reservoir engineering and the software. So in the first one I'm going to cover is the definition, the history, and the difference of AI with traditional statistics. Because as you all know, a lot of people call it data driven. And we know that in traditional statistics that have been around for 150 years, we've been using data, right? But are these the same? Unfortunately, some people use statistics and still call it AI. And what I'm going to cover is to see what the difference between these two is. This is general, this is artificial intelligence general.
Then after that I'm going to go to the engineering applications of this. I'm going to cover the science and engineering applications of AI. I'm going to cover how physics can be modeled using AI. And then there are 2 very, very interesting and very, very important topics for us in petroleum engineering: 1) is what's called AI ethics. And a lot of people think AI ethics should not be applied to engineering. Well, you will see absolutely it must be applied. 2) And finally, it's explainable AI. And the fact is (as you will see, as I will cover it), we do explain it. Everything that AI does, it's not a 'black box' in engineering (specifically in petroleum engineering).
After that I go to top-down modeling. I'll explain why it's called top-down modeling. It's a full field reservoir model and it uses AI. And I'll show you how it does history matching, how it does blind validation, how it does production optimization and forecasting, and infill location for the new wells, for the injection wells and producer wells.
And finally, I'm going to show you the software that they have developed that allows you all that.
