01. Lesson 1.01: Introduction

Hi, my name's Trevor Pugh. I'm here to give you an introductory course into low-frequency controlled source electromagnetics (or CSEM) for geophysics.
My background is in physics, although I spent most of my life and career working for R&D outfits, developing new products for the oilfield in general. I hope that this course will give you a good introduction into CSEM (or control source electromagnetics) and how it's used in the geophysical applications that we're going to cover. And I expect that this will give you information that will lead you to ask other questions about this technology.

02. Acknowledgments

So before we get into the course, I wanted to acknowledge some people that have helped us develop this technology. We've worked with the University of Texas extensively in their field testing site in Devine, which is near San Antonio in Texas. These guys have provided us with a lot of help to validate and prove some of the technologies we're going to talk about in this course. We've had extensive help from the University of British Columbia for modeling. Doug Oldenburg is well known in this area and we've also had some help from the Colorado School of Mines. There is a really interesting paper that we'll get into later on. I would also recommend, if you get the opportunity, go take a look at the AEC website. It's a really interesting website, it has lots and lots of new technologies that are being tested for the oilfield and I think it will be worth your while to do that.
I hope that you'll get really good use out of this course and if you have any questions about it, please fill in the "Ask the Instructor" box below and I'll see you in the next lesson.
