01. Lesson 1.01: Introduction and Overview

Hello, my name is Mark McClure and welcome to my SAGA Wisdom course on Enhanced Geothermal Systems. Very excited to share with you today. This is an extremely dynamic and rapidly changing and high potential area, and so it's a great thing for people to be aware of even if you haven't in the past been involved ingeothermal energy.
To briefly introduce myself, I'm the CEO of a company called ResFrac. We make reservoir and hydraulic fracture simulation software. We work with a broad array of oil and gas companies, particularly in shale, but really all over hydraulic fracturing, and also an increasing number of geothermal companies. For many years we've worked with a company called Fervo, which we'll talk about in this course, but in the last couple of years we've had a lot of other companies come in and start doing at least design work around enhanced geothermal systems. So a very exciting area.

02. Presenter Background

Also, my background, I've worked in enhanced geothermal systems for about 18, 19 years. I did my PhD on the topic of enhanced geothermal systems in the Stanford geothermal program and I've written many papers on it over the years, including my days when I was at the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor there in petroleum engineering. So have really worked on EGS for many years, I've seen things change, and continue to work with some of the leaders in this space. Also, I'm involved with the FORGE project. We'll talk about that as well. I chair the STAT committee, the Scientific Technical Advisory Team committee for that project, which is a committee of external advisors who contribute perspectives for the project.
