01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Welcome to Fundamentals of Methane Emissions Management. This is Part 1 of a 2-part series. We're talking all about methane today in the oil and gas industry. And we're gonna cover lots of good stuff.

02. Disclaimer

Before we get into it, just a quick disclaimer to say that while we do our best to provide you with very high-quality information that's up-to-date, we can't take any responsibility for decisions that are made from the material that are in this course.

03. Fundamentals of Methane Emissions Management Part 1

So, Fundamentals of Methane Emissions Management, Part 1. Methane is becoming a very important topic for the oil and gas industry. This course is designed for energy professionals in both oil and natural gas who are looking to derive a comprehensive overview of methane emissions management. We recommend that anyone can take this course, whether it's a beginner or an expert who's in need of a refresher. I often find that taking introductory courses every once in a while is very helpful, even if I'm very familiar with the content. This course is recommended as a prerequisite for many of Highwood's other courses. And so, you'll find that the lessons (the segments) in this course provide a quick glimpse of topics that we will go much deeper into in future courses. Part 2 of this course is also an overview that gets into different topics. We've broken them up so that they are more manageable, and can be taken one at a time.

04. Agenda

So, here's our agenda for today. We have three chapters that we're gonna be covering. In Chapter 1, we'll be introducing methane at a very high level for those who know very little about the molecule and its importance to society. In Chapter 2, we'll be talking about methane, specifically in the oil and gas industry. And in Chapter 3, we're gonna get into some of the nitty-gritty around how to estimate methane emissions, what traditional inventory estimation techniques look like, as well as some of the more novel emerging methane estimation methodologies.

05. Housekeeping

A little bit of housekeeping before we get started today. Who should take this course? As I just mentioned, we've designed this course to be accessible to beginners. And so, we really ease into methane here in the oil and gas industry. But, we have also designed it to be relevant and interesting to experts, specifically by leveraging contemporary research and findings, and work that we do with our clients that we think will be interesting and relevant to most stakeholders. We love constructive feedback, criticism, and opportunities to improve our content, so please send me a message. Happy to chat. We love feedback, and we'll be trying to update the course at a fairly regular interval to make sure that it remains relevant. Highwood is technology and vendor-agnostic. We often say, and you'll often hear, that there's no silver bullet. There's a lot of different technologies within the methane emissions space right now. And that's because the oil and gas industry is very diverse. And so, many of these solutions apply in some situations but not in others. Highwood have no financial ties to any of the vendors or technology companies that we work with or that we talk about in this course. And we do not make any endorsements, whether real or implied, of any of those solutions. Small disclaimer here. There may be some educated opinions in this course from me. There's a lot to learn in methane emissions, and a lot is changing quite quickly. And so, while we try to minimize conjecture, a little bit slips in, and some of the information that you'll hear today is my own interpretation of where things are going, which I hope is valuable. Finally, another disclaimer, which is that the methane space changes daily. There are new satellites going up, new technologies, new algorithm is being developed, software is changing, regulations are changing. It feels like almost on a daily basis. And so, the course will be outdated almost as soon as it's recorded, but we have made an attempt to include information that will become outdated more slowly. And we intend to update the course as needed. But just so that you're aware at the time that you're watching it, there may be elements that are slightly outdated. With that out of the way, I'm gonna jump right into Chapter 1, and hope to see you there.
