01. Lesson 1.01: Introduction

Hi, I'm Amanda Rico, and I'm very, very excited to be coming to you today because I'm going to be partnering with SAGA Wisdom. And they reached out to me because they were looking for someone to help with oil and gas pros doing resumés, cover letters, LinkedIn optimization, networking and outreach, things like that. So very, very excited to be teaming up with them.

02. Background

A little bit about my background. A lot of people ask me if I come from oil and gas and the answer is no. Actually, I am an English nerd. I've got a bachelor's, Masters, Ph.D., all in English from the University of Oklahoma and from Texas A&M University. Very excited to have gotten those. But once I got them, I didn't exactly know what to do with them. So instead of going the academic route, I decided to go the route where I would be helping people and building resumés, cover letters, things like that. My husband is actually a drilling completions guy, upstream and midstream space. And so the more that I learned about his background in oil and gas, the more that I connected with people who did geology, reservoir engineering, petroleum engineering in general, all across the E&P value chain. The more that I learned and gained kind of background experience in what everyone does in their respective specializations and professions. So that is what's brought me here today, 15+ years of doing that. A little bit more about kind of my professional background is that I've been a writer for the Houston Business Journal. I have worked with Oil Woman magazine. They actually reached out to me to do a column. I worked with NASA, doing workshops, presentations, things like that. And I really am someone who loves working with oil and gas pros. I've built a LinkedIn presence, almost have 40,000 followers which is very exciting. Just really, really excited to work with oil and gas pros, specifically because a lot of these are extremely technical specializations. And so whenever you reach out to someone and ask them to do your resumé, they don't know what a geologist does, they don't know what a reservoir engineer does, it is going to be a mess. So that's one of the biggest things that I love about what I do is that I get to bring that expertise and knowing what everyone does across the E&P value chain and mold things, mold materials to exactly what they need.
A big part of this is also career changing. So whenever COVID hits, we had some big shifts and moving into the broader energy space. So not only am I going to discuss in the course that I've prepared for you, a 4-chapter course, focusing on resumés, cover letters, LinkedIn, and networking and outreach. Not only am I going to go through the basics of how to do that, but I'm also going to tailor this for oil, gas and the broader energy space. So if you do need to shift some wording, if you are aiming for multiple targets, then you'll be able to do that based off of how I instruct you and how I guide you through exactly how to shift the wording, redraft, think about your audience, things like that, because these are all important pieces of what's going to set you apart on the market. So looking forward to it and let's go.
