01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Welcome. I'm Zack Warren with Velocity Insight and this is Intermediate Power BI for SAGA Wisdom.
This is Chapter 1 on Business Intelligence Adoption. And this lesson is entitled, 'OK, so I know how to click some buttons. Now what?'.

02. Are You In The Right Class?

The first question of course is are you in the right class? This is the right class for you if: #1) You have more than about 40 hours worth of hands-on Power BI experience. #2) You want to be a productive analyst of data or author of reports. #3) If you have an industrial background. I come from upstream oil and gas, but other industries would probably find benefit here as well. I would note if you expected any of these people to be your teacher, you are in the wrong class. Please go find a different one.
Also, please note our chapters are designed to be independent but the lessons are not. So if you're really interested in DAX or mapping, feel free to jump ahead to one of those chapters, but the lessons inside of that chapter will build sequentially on each other. I think a lot of people will benefit from going through this entire class from start to finish, but if there's a particular topic you want to zoom ahead on, again, the chapters are designed to be independent.
If you look at this list and say, 'Boy, I'm not sure that I'm ready for this', give it a shot anyway. But if you're sure that you're not ready, go back and watch our intro classes on SAGA Wisdom. I think you'll find that you're in a good position to take this class once you're done with those.

03. Who Are These Nerds?

The second question, Who are these nerds? I'm Zack Warren (the guy on the left). I started my career at ExxonMobil as a reservoir engineer, worked for Netherland Sewell and several smaller operators. The guy on the right is Michael Hirsch. He started at Shell and worked at Newfield and again a number of smaller operators. He and I met at a company called Great Western Petroleum (may it rest in peace), and worked together at Velocity Insight here for about the last 3 years.

04. Our Approach For This Class

Our approach for this class is a mix of Tell, Show, and Do. On the Do side, you can kind of choose how much of that you want to do on your own. If you want to do every single exercise, you're going to learn more but it'll also take you longer to get through this class. As opposed to our intro class, which was very heavy on click here - click there, the intermediate class is going to be a little bit more focused on concepts. So there isn't going to be as much of the 'clicky - clicky' kind of thing that we did in the intro class. Second, you're going to be taking home some real PBIX files that work based on either public or anonymized datasets that come from our clients. They should be good starting places for you as you're taking those datasets to try to solve problems in your own business. And most of all, you should be looking for alot of ideas about where to go. The examples, the resources, the frameworks of thinking about this stuff that put you in a position where you'll continue to learn. I've got a few thousand hours worth of Power BI experience under my belt at this point plus alot more in Spotfire and SAS and R previous in my career, and I'm continuing to learn new things about Power BI. You are not going to be done at the end of this course, but hopefully you're in a position where you know where to go.

05. Who We Are

So who are we? Velocity Insight is a data management and analytics consulting firm. We mostly work for E&P companies in the oil and gas business, but we've also worked on some other kinds of projects as well. Our focus is to have really, really deep oil and gas experience, an understanding of the state of the art out there in the technology, as well as some of the old legacy software that just will not die. And alot of real-world digitalization experience. So that's what we do for a living.

06. Intermediate Chapter Outline

Chapter 1. So I want to give an outline of the chapters that we're going to address in the intermediate course. Number one right here is Business Intelligence Adoption. I want to start here because we're going to introduce some concepts that will refer back to over the rest of the course. This may sound kind of like, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know how to get stuff done', but I think there's some useful material in this chapter that will help you get more out of the rest of the chapters to follow. In particular, if you're coming from either Excel or Spotfire, we've got some material here that will be really useful to you.
Chapter 2 will be Michael. We call it Putting the Power in Power Query. This is an ETL or data transformation tool that's kind of embedded inside of Power BI. Very, very useful. I've become a big fan.
We'll do a deep dive on DAX. DAX is the language that we use to calculate stuff in Power BI.
And then Data Modeling for Dummies (like Engineers). People who aren't coming from a computer science background may have never been taught alot of these concepts on data modeling. But they are incredibly useful for any kind of data work, and in particular if you're working with a tabular data model like we do in Power BI.
Chapter 5 on Mapping and Geospatial Analysis. Mapping is incredibly important in the oil and gas industry as well as alot of other industries, and there's a lot of nice features in Power BI to be able to perform those workloads.
And then Chapter 6 is on Visual Design and User Interface. Microsoft calls Power BI 'PowerPoint for dummies', and alot of what we're trying to do in Chapter 6 is explain how to get to a really high quality interactive report there.

07. Chapter Goals

Our specific chapter goals here in Chapter 1: We want to understand some key factors for adoption; Deliver some key concepts that are really going to help you as you're migrating from either Excel or Spotfire; And then listen to some wise words from people far wiser than Michael and I, people who've been in this business a long time and have developed some ways of thinking about it that I think you'll find really useful.
