01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Hello and welcome to the SAGA course on Practical CO₂ Miscible Flooding. My name is Ron Wackowski and my friends in the industry call me Wacko.

02. My CO₂-Related Experience

Just a quick summary of my CO₂ related experience. I began working on CO₂ floods in 1986 and have worked nearly continuously on CO₂ floods until the present. I have over 35 years of experience in CO₂ flooding process, mostly in operations and optimizations, and I'd like to share some of that information with you folks.

03. Why Take This Course?

Why take this course? CO₂ miscible flooding is a proven enhanced oil recovery technique. The first large-scale project, the SACROC field in West Texas began in 1974 and is still in operation today. I'll present a case study on this very interesting project later in the course. In addition, CO₂ miscible flooding results in the sequestration of CO₂. Due to incentives that may be available for carbon capture, utilization, and storage, new business opportunities may be available to those applying it in their fields.

04. Course Objectives

After completing this course, you should be aware of CO₂ related safety issues, which are quite different than waterflood safety issues. You should be able to explain the CO₂ flooding process. You should be able to explain the importance of CO₂ miscible flooding and where it might fit in your company's portfolio. You'll be familiar with CO₂ physical properties and understand how those properties help and/or hinder the CO₂ miscible flooding process. You'll be familiar with the miscibility concept. You will be able to describe the PVT properties important to CO₂ project design and operation. You'd be able to describe the screening tools available for CO₂ flooding, and also define the WAG process, and describe flood optimization options (such as reservoir pressure management, pattern balancing, and others that we'll explore during the course).

05. Course Objectives (2)

You should also be able to describe options for estimating or predicting CO₂ miscible flood performance. You should be knowledgeable on what fluid and reservoir data are needed for detailed design of CO₂ projects. You'll be able to describe and design a successful surveillance and monitoring program for a CO₂ project. Also, you'll be aware of design implications for surface and subsurface and the practical ways to address those implications. You'll be aware of CO₂ issues related to operations and ways to address those issues. You'll be able to describe common issues, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices for CO₂ floods. You'll be aware of reasons that some floods fail, and you'll also be aware of the opportunities in the "Residual Oil Zones" (ROZs).
As part of this course, I'll present two case studies, including SACROC and Rangely, to show some lessons learned from those very large projects.

We'll start with this chapter on "Why CO₂ flooding?". Why you should consider CO₂ flooding in your field. We'll discuss improved recovery, extended asset life, and CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage) opportunities.
