01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Welcome to the Diagenetic Controls on Reservoir Quality in Carbonates, Clastics, and Unconventional Reservoirs course. My name is Anita Csoma, and I will be delivering this course to you. However, I have developed this program together with Gianni Mallarino. Now let's look at what we will be learning here.

02. The Learning Journey

This is your learning journey. It's a journey where you will discover in six chapters the details of diagenesis and its implications to reservoir quality. So first, we are going to talk about in Chapter 1 why does diagenesis matter and what is reservoir quality? Chapter 2 will be about which tools help us to identify and interpret diagenisis. Chapter 3, 4 and 5 will be deep diving into the three different reservoir types. Chapter 3 will be talking about carbonates, in Chapter 4 we will be exploring the details of clastic reservoir quality, and Chapter 5 we will be exploring the details of unconventional reservoirs. And in our final chapter, in Chapter 6, we will be asking the question of how do we bring diagenetic thinking into better subsurface decisions. So before we jump into the course, let me introduce ourselves a little more details.

03. Meet Your Instructors

My name is Anita Csoma and currently I am working for an executive school where I teach various leadership courses. And my partner in this course and actually my partner-in-life, my husband, is Gianni Mallarino with whom we have developed this course together.

04. Combined We Bring:

Combined, we bring 50+ years of experience in reservoir quality and reservoir characterization. Myself, I have 13+ years of leadership experience in subsurface decision-making. Also, we have experience in 50 different types of reservoirs worldwide, which I will show you in the next slide. Together, we worked for four different companies, ConocoPhillips in Houston, Shell International in the Netherlands, MOLGroup in Budapest, Hungary, and PanTerra, which is a consultancy firm in the Netherlands. We are also very passionate about teaching. We have 13+ years of academic research and teaching experience in sedimentology,diagenesis, and reservoir quality evaluation. So now let me show you in the next slide on where we worked across the world.

05. The Reservoirs We've Worked On

In this map, we just wanted to highlight to you all the different types of reservoirs we worked on. Red ones are showing the outcrop studies we have done in various countries (in Jamaica, Majorca, and in Italy). The blue ones are representing our experience in carbonate reservoirs (Alaska, the Permian Basin, the North Sea of Ekofisk, Sirt Basin, various carbonates in Hungary, and then the big Middle East fields, such as the Natih, the North Field, Dukhan, and the reservoirs of Thamama, but also Malampaya). Gianni has quite an experience also in deep water deposits, as well as shallow water. He worked in Papua New Guinea. And then in clastics extensively in the Gulf of Mexico. Through our consulting and in-company works, we also worked on a lot of clastic reservoirs: Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, Bohai Bay, and the Browse Basin. And then finally, unconventionals were also quite a focus of our studies and work. We worked in a lot reservoirs in North America. And then also we have some experience in a tied sense in Hungary.

06. Gianni Mallarino, Ph.D.

A little bit more detail about Gianni, he is very much deep in technical expertise in reservoir characterization, as I mentioned in several companies around the globe. He also worked in E&P life cycles from exploration to field development and in research. And recently he has been working on some of the clean energy projects in MOLGroup.

07. Anita É. Csoma, Ph.D.

Myself is: I have nearly 25 years experience in geoscience and subsurface work, industry background from ConocoPhillips, Shell, and MOLGroup. I have led several teams that are focusing on reservoir quality. And my passion has been always is how to make the technical tools practical and understandable for all the scientists and engineers in the oil and gas industry. In the past three years I have been working in an executive school in Budapest where I am actually designing at the moment future business skills for leaders. But let's just see what is reservoir quality in a minute and why we developed this course.

08. Reservoir Quality Prediction is an Interdisciplinary Effort

In 2010, I was working for Shell Research in the Netherlands, and ConocoPhillips actually called me back to come back to the States and build a reservoir quality team. I really like reservoir quality anddiagenesis because it's a discipline that really integrates a lot of other disciplines. So in our team, from 2010 and 2014, we had sedimentologists, stratigraphers, diagenesis specialists, development geologists, touchstone modelers, pore-scale flow modelers and reactive transport modelers in our team. The integrated view really helped us to work with various business units and collaborate with different scientific and engineering fields. What I have noticed in my experience is that because reservoir quality is quite a detailed toolkit that we are working on, very often the scientists had the difficulty to translate our understanding to other disciplines, so that the engineers and the field geologists, the explorers, would really understand how we can contribute to their decision making.

09. This Course:

This course is really about how to help reservoir quality non-specialists (that includes geoscientists, petrophysicists,seismic experts, but also engineers) move beyond seeing reservoir quality as a collection of confusing details. Instead, I would like to teach you what are the key drivers that matter so that you can ask better questions, you can collaborate more effectively, and make informed subsurface decisions.

10. This Course is Not:

What this course is not about: it's not a deep dive into every tool and technique that we use in our evaluation. So we will not deep dive into seismic logs, sequence stratigraphy, or geomodeling. It is a rock-based way to think about reservoir quality.
