01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Hello and welcome to Introduction to Seismic Principles course. My name is Riccardo Vercesi and I'm going to be talking about the principles of seismic in the oil and gas industry.
I will cover several topics from the basics of the seismic methods to the reason why we shoot seismic and why it's so important for the industry. To the way we plan, we design, and we acquire and process the seismic data. I will focus at the end on HSE (health, safety, and environment) and the regulatory obligations.
But before diving into the course content, let me briefly introduce myself. I'm a geologist with a master in geophysics. I've been in the oil and gas industry for more than 25 years internationally. I work for ENI, Talisman Energy, Repsol, and Total Energies, and have been based and posted to Italy, UK, the Netherlands, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and Taiwan. Covering several roles from geophysicist to client rep, and then into more senior roles like geophysical operation manager, exploration manager, and the senior operation manager. I'm now working as a consultant for oil and gas and renewable energies.

02. Course Objectives

Let's start the course with the main objectives. So the main objective of the course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles ofseismic exploration with a focus on seismic design and operational techniques applied by E&P operators.
The audience: The course is targeting essentially E&P professionals with no or limited experience inseismic acquisition and exploration geophysics.

03. Learning Objectives

The learning objectives are essentially to acquire the fundamental principles of seismic exploration. To get a better understanding of the seismic operation process with a focus on benefits and the limitation of seismic exploration. To gain an insight into seismic design, seismic acquisition, field operation, seismic processing, and data QC. To acquire the fundamental principles of HSE (health, safety, and the environment) management and regulatory requirements.

04. Introduction to Exploration Geophysics

The course is divided in 5 chapters. The first one is the introduction to exploration geophysics, where we'll coverseismic principles, why we shoot seismic, the strategy and objectives of a seismic survey, and a introduction to the seismic theory.

05. Seismic Principles

The second chapter is about the seismic principles. So we'll cover the seismic design principles, the design and operational constraints, and the 2D vs. 3D seismic benefits and pitfalls.

06. Seismic Design & Operational Techniques

The third is about seismic design and operational techniques, where we will enter more into the technical part, covering the land and marine seismic, seismic design and geometries, seismic sources (both onshore and offshore), seismic receivers (again, onshore and offshore), equipment like a streamer, OBC, nodes, and shallow water, the equipment we used in operations, 4D seismic or time-lapse seismic touching base on principles and objectives, high-resolution seismic and broadband seismic, that is the state of the art of the technology, and the risk assessment and the contractual strategies at the end.

07. Seismic Processing Principles & Data QA/QC

Last but certainly not least, seismic processing principles and data QA/QC. We'll cover the way we process the seismic data, so seismic processing principles and objectives, the seismic processing workflows, examples, seismic data QA/QC, time to depth conversion, seismic amplitude analysis, direct hydrocarbon indicators, seismic attributes analysis, and AVO processing (AVO stands for amplitude vs. offset), with principles and analysis.

08. HSE Management in Seismic Operations

We will end off the course with a very important and key part, that is the HSE management inseismic operation. Touching base on HSE goals and objectives, the management and the commitments and accountability, the company policies, standards and objectives, individual commitments and obligations, HSE performance and the importance of reporting, environmental and regulatory considerations.
