01. Lesson 1.01: Sustainability, ESG and Performance Intro

Hello, my name is Paul Griss. I'm pleased to be delivering this course on Sustainability, ESG and Performance for SAGA Wisdom. And I also have a companion course on Climate Change, Net Zero and the Energy Transition, which I hope you'll also participate in.

02. Background

My background on sustainability issues goes back more than 30 years to the origination of the concept in the late 1980s. Since then, I've participated in a wide variety of exercises that are intended to help people understand and interpret the concepts of sustainable development.

03. The future of forests is in our hands

I was a contributor to the development of the Forest Stewardship Council in the mid 1990s. I was heavily involved in the development of the Canadian Standards Association, Sustainable Forest Management Standard.
I've worked closely with equitable origin and I'm currently vice chair of the Alliance for Water Stewardship, a global organization that has a standard for water stewardship that's applicable around the world. Merely observing them as someone who has a lot of depth on sustainability issues gained in a variety of sectors over much of Canada and internationally.
So what you're going to take away from this course is a better understanding of the concepts of sustainability and ESG to try and bring some more rigor to how those terms are being used and interpreted in a company setting. We're going to look at how those issues relate to the regulatory framework within which you operate.
We're going to unpack the concept of ESG, so you more fully understand what the proper scope of the 3 letters is. We'll look at some of the broader societal factors and other initiatives that will impact the development of an ESG strategy. And we'll lay out a rough pathway forward that a company can follow, either to develop an ESG strategy or to make its existing ESG efforts more robust and credible.
Of necessity, this is complex subject matter. I'm going to be skimming over a lot of things very quickly and not going to weigh you down with a lot of acronyms and organizations and processes. But if you would like any elucidation or clarification on any of the issues that I touch on in this lecture series, please don't hesitate to contact me directly or use the chat function that SAGA Wisdom provides. Thank you.
