01. Lesson 1.01: Introduction & Intent of This Course

Well, hello and welcome to The Business Case for Inclusion and Belonging, more specifically to theenergy sector. We're gonna start out with just a little bit about introducing Narissa and I first as we will be taking you through the next few chapters. I will start off together and then we'll do some individual chapters.

02. Meet the Team

So, what should we tell them Narissa? I guess my name's Inez. My pronouns are she/her. I think of myself as a cultural innovator, a dynamic leader, and a very powerful advocate in inclusion. I've been in this space for probably just over 15 years more specific, and probably the majority of that time has been within the energy sector. My career began after immigrating here from the UK 15 - 16 years ago and so you'll be able to pick up on a lot of my accent all the way through. But I've really been in this sector for 15 years, 4 years was actually when I started out on my own. I've never been one to follow the crowd. In grade school I was always the kid wearing orange and red together; you can probably see I still have a very colorful side to me. And I also think I have a wicked sense of humor.
With that, I am going to pass you over to my partner in crime, Narissa, who can tell you a little bit about herself and kick us off before we get into Chapter 1.
Thanks, Inez. Hi there. My name is Narissa Jessa and I've been in the inclusion and belonging space for several years now. My work is all about helping organizations in the energy sector embed inclusion and belonging into their culture, and not just on paper but really in practice. I've spent years leading inclusive strategy development, delivering impactful training, and really creating policies that move the needle. So whether I'm working with field teams, engineers, or executive leadership, I really focus on making inclusion relatable and actionable. I take an intersectional approach to everything I do. And I'm passionate about breaking downbarriers, whether they're cultural, systemic, or industry specific. I'm constantly learning, unlearning, and showing up with curiosity, compassion, and a good sense of humor (maybe not as good as Inez's, but still a good sense of humor). I also proudly live and work on Treaty 7 territory and carry that responsibility with me.

03. Land Acknowledgement

So let's take a moment to start us off with the land acknowledgement. Inclusive Concepts Inc. acknowledges that we operate on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, and the Tsuut'ina and the Stony Nakoda nations) as well as Métis Nation Region 3. We honor the past, the present, and future caretakers.

05. Full Course Agenda

So our full course agenda is going to be 6 chapters. So you can see Chapter 1 is going to be an introduction to inclusion and belonging. This is really where we're going to set the stage. Chapter 2 is all about inclusive teams and a high-performance culture. Chapter 3 is about cultural competency in the energy sector, which is one of my favorite topics. Chapter 4 is recognizing and addressing unconscious bias. Chapter 5 is inclusive communication in the workplace. And then we're going to finish off with Chapter 6 which is practical applications and key learning. So really, after you take this course, what can you really go away and do in your day-to-day to make sure that inclusion is a top priority.
So with that, we will see you in Chapter 1.
