01. Lesson 1.00: Introduction

Hello, my name is Jessica Shumlich. I'm the CEO of Highwood Emissions Management and I'm excited to be able to present the course today on Voluntary Initiatives and Emissions Reduction Certifications in Oil and Gas.

02. Disclaimer

So we'll just start off with a quick disclaimer. I just wanted to quickly mention that everything that we are presenting here is going to be our best take on what the actual voluntary initiatives are. But please note that this is a very changing space and we just want to reserve the right to know that this is the best of our knowledge right now but none of the information that we present should be used for any decision-making from a financial, legal, or professional perspective.

03. Voluntary Initiatives and Emissions Certifications

So let's get into the details. So today's course on Voluntary Initiatives and Emissions Certifications for Oil and Gas is an exciting course that is going to be important for the future of oil and gas. I just want to make a quick note that we don't make a determination on whether or not these voluntary initiatives are good or bad, we're just strictly presenting the facts of the initiatives. Please note that we're specifically looking at voluntary emissions reductions initiatives, and we've included some initiatives that have emissions reductions in them, but maybe there's a broader scope of ESG or otherwise.
So as I said, my name is Jessica Shumlich. The course will be approximately a half day and we recommend that you take the Fundamentals of Methane, Parts 1 and 2 as a prerequisite."Fundamentals of Methane Emissions Management Part 1" by Thomas Fox"Fundamentals of Methane Emissions Management Part 2" by Thomas Fox

04. Agenda

Today, we'll go over a variety of different topics, including an introduction tovoluntary initiatives. We'll go over the emergence of them, why they're important, and what you need to know generally. We'll then go into the different categories of voluntary initiatives. These voluntary initiative categories, which is developed by Highwood Emissions in our Voluntary Initiatives report, will go into commitments, certifications, methodologies, and other initiatives. We'll then wrap up with a conclusion and we'll put you on your way.

05. Housekeeping

OK, so let's go into some housekeeping items in the next few slides. We'll talk about, first of all, who should take this course. Secondly, we'll talk about feedback. We absolutely love feedback and we hope you take the opportunity to give us feedback so that we can improve our content. We also want to note that we are technology and vendor agnostic. There's no silver bullet to any of these initiatives. Again, we're merely trying to present the facts such that companies, organizations, and individuals can make their own decisions. So lastly, we just want to let you know that I'm going to do my best to not just present the facts, but also give you a little bit of an overview of where we think the voluntary initiative space is going based on our knowledge and working very closely with many of the organizations that we present in this course.
Remember, this changes daily. We're recording this course in Q3 of 2024, and we know that there are going to be many changes that will come. We commit to making sure that we have the best and most recent information, but please ensure that you do your own research as it may be outdated.

08. Increase Your Knowledge

So my goal for you today is to help you navigate this complex space. Again, as I've said before, the space changes extremely quickly. Highwood has been publishing a report on voluntary initiatives since 2021. In 2021, we identified 20 different unique voluntary initiatives. We predicted in that same report that there would be consolidation in the future for these initiatives. But note that in 2022, we saw an expansion to 24 initiatives, including 8 net new ones. Although we know how quickly things are changing, I'm going to do my best to represent these initiatives as they are today. Like I said, I'll provide the facts, but I'm also going to leverage my knowledge, talk about the trends in the industry, and I hope that will be helpful to those who are taking the course.
With that background, let's get this course started and we'll start to talk about introduction to voluntary initiatives.
